When some of Erica’s favorite local landmarks were razed for new box-like construction, the changes in her familiar landscape, prompted her to capture the structures and landscapes that defined her neighborhood.
As a third generation gardener and native of Los Angeles, she notes constant changes in her backyard too, where spring blooms quickly fade, and the long stretch of So Cal’s dry weather tests the drought tolerance of native plantings. Frequent hikes through the local city terrain, and visits to the high desert, present Erica with natural setting subjects and fresh perspectives.
The LA County Store in Silverlake featured Erica’s “Very Local” solo show of 34 neighborhood images and her work also appeared Avenue 50 Gallery’s “From the Heart” group show.
Erica paints with a direct, easy style in acrylic and gouache on small-size panels and paper. The small size, she says, reminds her to stay in “workshop, practice mode”.
